Keeping the Rail Sector Safe and Future-Ready

Keeping the Rail Sector Safe and Future-Ready

A shortage of technical personnel, stringent safety requirements and growing maintenance demands are driving the need for innovative solutions across the rail sector. Thanks to the Advisory Voucher Scheme (Adviesvoucherregeling) from Kansen voor West, the Integraal Kennisinstituut was given the opportunity to work with students from the Minor Robotics programme on a real-world challenge. The students chose to focus on the development of an autonomous earthing robot for the railway sector.

Working closely with their client, the students explored how an autonomous earthing robot could contribute to safer and more efficient maintenance operations. The concept is designed to navigate railway tracks independently, earth overhead power lines and continuously monitor site safety conditions. Within five months, the student teams developed an initial working prototype.

The project not only demonstrated the technical feasibility of the concept, but also highlighted how robotics can contribute to a safer and more future-proof rail sector.

Bringing together industry, education and research, the project enabled students to tackle a challenge that originated directly from industry. Through the networks of the Integraal Kennisinstituut, RoboHouse, rail sector partners, Railcenter, DelftRail Institute and Stichting Innovatie en Talent, a practical innovation issue was transformed into a valuable learning and research opportunity.

Not just a technical Achievement

The Advisory Voucher Scheme enabled much more than the development of a prototype. By making it possible to embed the innovation challenge within TU Delft Mechanical Engineerings Minor Robotics programme, where multidisciplinary  student teams were able to investigate and develop the concept independently, supported by academic staff and industry experts. The results were proudly presented during the annual Minor Robotics Demo Day.

The Advisory Voucher Scheme is made possible in part by Kansen voor West and is co-funded by the European Union.
